September 16, 2008 – 2nd Annual Women's Golf Academy
The WID-GFC hosted our 2nd Annual Women’s Golf Academy at Glade Valley Golf Club instructed by George Stem, Master Teaching Professional and Leo Duncan, Glade Valley Pro Shop. We were excited to see many new faces whom we hope will join WID. We learned about the rules and scoring of golf along with some etiquette tips. We spent a lot of time working on our short game (fairway and greenside bunker shots, chipping and pitching, and putting) and long game (full swing on-the-tee and off-the-fairway). After a deli lunch, we played a 9-hole best-ball tournament to work on our newly acquired skills.
The weather was absolutely beautiful and everyone had a great time. Many thanks to Glade Valley and George Stem for the generous prizes and awards which included free golf lessons and free rounds of golf to encourage us to keep playing! Thank you to Scott Defibaugh and Harry Coffey who helped everyone out during the day. Finishing Touches Massage Center at 620 West Patrick St in Frederick Maryland provided complimentary seated massages for our attendees.
Thank you to our event sponsors!!

August 9, 2008 – Frederick Women’s Distance Festival 5K Race
WID-GFC was one of the sponsors of this 5K run hosted by the local Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club. WID-GFC likes to promote a healthy lifestyle for all women as part of a successful personal and professional life. Now more than ever, we know how important an active lifestyle is in order to stay or become healthy.
The race was held at Frederick Community College on a beautiful day. Almost 200 women and girls participated in this race, including many new runners who were experiencing their first 5K race. The race was part of the 19th Annual Women’s Distance Festival Grand Prix Series. This is a series of running/walking events for women only that is held throughout the State of Maryland and hosted by local running clubs.

May 8, 2008 – Second Annual WID-GFC “Reach for the Stars” Awards Dinner
Over 80 people attended the WID-GFC Second Annual “Reach for the Stars” Dinner and Awards Program which was held at Dutch's Daughter restaurant in Frederick, MD. COL Gina Deutsch Commander, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Detrick introduced the event speaker, Major General George W. Weightman, Commanding General, U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and Fort Detrick. MG Weightman gave a motivational talk about what it takes to be a great leader. Julianna Albowicz, from Senator Mikulski's office, presented signed senatorial certificates to the awardees and WID-GFC.
Here are some of MG Weightman’s tips on leadership:
1. Leadership must be learned - very few people are born leaders. To become a good leader you need to study and practice what you learn.
2. Establish the vision and share it. People can’t follow if they don’t know where you are going.
3. Prioritize your efforts. Avoid the “herding cats” situation.
4. Establish standards. Set the standard so that everyone can know what the expectations are.
5. Be a role model.
6. If you are not an extrovert- become one. You need to communicate and interact with your people. You should let your people know how you think.
7. Push the envelope- don’t be afraid of failure and be flexible in your thinking.
8. Treat everyone the same. Know your personal biases and guard against them.
9. Get organized with respect to information etc.
10. Develop emotional stability- be the same person every day. Maintain a consistent demeanor so that your people know what to expect.
